ERAB, The European Foundation for Alcohol Research

The ERAB e-Newsletter - Issue 19

Applications received in 2015

ERAB is pleased to announce that following the late call for applications made in May this year we received a record 67 applications.

They have been received from 15 countries across Europe and 10 projects involve collaboration with other European countries. For the first time more applications came from Italy (14) and Spain (10), than the UK (9) and applications were received from Croatia and Romania.

The split between biomedical and psychosocial subjects was 50 / 16.

As before the majority of applicants had heard about ERAB funding from a colleague or via ERAB either as a past applicant, the website, the newsletter or an acknowledgement in a published paper.

The applications will now be independently peer reviewed before a decision is made on which can be funded. The process takes several months to complete and the decisions will be made in the late autumn, in time for contracts to be signed and the projects commenced early in the new year.

ERAB meets with Brewing Scientists

In May, ERAB organised an exploratory meeting with the European Brewery Convention (EBC), the scientific and technological arm of The Brewers of Europe. This was an enjoyable and informative meeting, the purpose of which, was to explore the potential for additional research about aspects of beer, forge new relationships and improve the flow of information between the ERAB and the brewing science community. Dr. Ramon Estruch, a member of the ERAB Advisory Board, and a number of ERAB grantees spoke about their research and experts from the brewing science field described the stages of beer production and components of beer such as silicon or polyphenols etc. which may affect health. Further joint meetings will be planned.
